Perestroika Etsy Style
Mikhail Gorbachev defined Perestroika, in part, as:
"Perestroika means overcoming the stagnation process, breaking down the braking mechanism, creating a dependable and effective mechanism for acceleration of social and economic progress and giving it greater dynamism." Source: Mikhail Gorbachev, Perestroika (New York: Harper Collins, 1987).
Certainly, if you buy and/or sell on Etsy, you know there is no stagnation and the brakes are off. And I, for one, have found it a dependable and effective mechanism for social and economic progress.
Etsy is not just a venue to buy and sell; it's a lifestyle, maybe even a compulsion, if you let it. The shopkeepers on Etsy are limited to selling handcrafted items, supplies to create handcrafted items or vintage goods (defined as 20 years or older). The assortment of goods is outstanding and the creativity of the artisans who sell their creations on Etsy is amazing.
Each Etsy shopkeeper sets up their unique shop. They provide as much information as they care to share in their profile, create or select a picture banner and organize the shop into sections if they so choose.
It takes some time to get acclimated, to learn the ins and outs. There are new terms to learn, terms like "circle", "treasury list", "hearted", "favorite", "admire", "front page", "convo". I remember the first person who "hearted" my shop (Old Cottage). I was so excited! I didn't know what a "treasury list" was for the first couple of weeks and then I received a "convo" advising me that one of my items had been included in a treasury. More excitement.
One of the unique features on Etsy is the amazingly gorgeous photos each shopkeeper posts to display items for sale. A good photo will, of course, help to sell an item, but on Etsy it's more. A good photo is coveted. You can "favorite" items and the photos of all the items you favorite are saved in a listing. You can then use these wonderful photos to create a treasury list.
Any Etsy member can curate a treasury which a listing of 16 photos of items for sale on Etsy. You should not include any of your own items, only items of other shopkeepers. It's a way to help promote sales for others and yet also get your shop in front of the eyes of others. Usually there is some connected theme to these items and to create a successful treasury, the photos should be outstanding. Once you create your treasury, you can then post it live on Etsy for all to see. Fellow Etsians can then view the list, click on individual items included in the treasury, and comment on the list. They can also "admire" the list. All of these activities are tracked and counted. The popularity or "hotness" of a treasury could possibly catapult to the coveted Etsy front page.
I create treasury lists because I enjoy the creative process, the viewing and selecting and piecing together of 16 photos into a beautiful cohesive work of art. I also use the treasury as a way to support other Etsians who have commented, admired or favorited one of my items or lists. It's my way of thanking them. I created the following treasury "Pendants" for just that purpose. And this treasury did find it's way to the number one spot of the front page. It had just over 300 views when I went to bed the night I created it and had over 1100 views when I awoke the next morning. Exactly why this happened, I don't know. But there were a few shopkeepers who were featured who obviously promoted this list to the hilt.
There are many Etsy "teams" that you could join...such as vintage teams, treasury teams, teams according to your craft or location, age, hobbies, pets...you name it and there's probably a team for it. And there's a tremendous amount of community in some of these teams. Some teams are almost like family...you greet your fellow team mates in the morning, let them know what's going on with you during the day and log out at night.
If there is an Etsy shop that you admire and would like to follow their activities, their favorites, their treasuries, then you can put these shops in your "circle" and you get to follow what's going on with them.
And one of the things I enjoy most is communicating with wonderful people from around the world. I get to visit their shops, see their amazing creations, feature their items in my treasuries and have my items featured in theirs. We are a community and we are all working together for a common good: the success of our fellow Etsians as well as our own.

Jump In To Color!
A while back a friend of mine had moved into a new home and all the walls were white. She had inherited some vintage family furniture and wasn't sure how to arrange it or what to do with it. She was thinking of just storing it in the garage and buying inexpensive new furniture that would fit into her budget.
I asked her how she felt about perhaps painting the focal fireplace wall and just trying out the family furniture to see how it looked. She said she'd consider painting the wall...what color was I thinking?
"Red" was my answer.
"Red!" "I hate red," she responded and looked at me like I had lost my mind.
"Look, the worst thing that happens is that we try it, you hate it, and we paint it back white. What's the big deal? Give it a try."
After a lot of persuading, she finally gave in.
We painted the wall a deeper red first with a very lightly brushed top coat of a brick shade. That light top coat gave the red a very interesting depth. The mantle was white, so we painted it a glossy Kona coffee color that would work nicely with her vintage mahogany side tables and coffee table. It also would work nicely with the brown and red Persian area rug.
She had three old red velvet upholstered chairs, a lovely Oriental silk screen, an antique coral color kimino, lamps with round brown glass bases and bronze metallic shades and various accessory items.
Pictured is the result...she loved it. And all it cost was the price of the paint. (That's the kimono hanging on the right wall!)

I thought it would be interesting to try to put a treasury together of those shopkeepers/models...it was more work than I anticipated but I do like the finished result (although I am not 100% sure all of those featured are also shop owners!)

Research...Research...Research
I’ve sold antiques on the internet for well over a decade now and the most enjoyable part of the entire process for me is the research involved. As you well know, you never attempt to sell something unless you know what it is and have a fairly good idea of its value. Sometimes it’s a fairly simple matter identifying an item. Sometimes, however, you spend hours…days…weeks searching, searching, searching. And sometimes you never find an answer. I’ve become a woman possessed at times, consumed with the search, only to come up empty.
And it usually starts with “Hey, what’s this thing?” With the wealth of information available on the internet, how difficult can it be to identify something? What is this weird shaped little mother of pearl thingy? Who made these metal toy soldiers and why do they have red uniforms and white hats? How old is this clothespin? Where and when was this straight razor made? What’s the history behind this play money? What kind of seashells are these? It goes on and on. I’ve spent days looking through patent applications; weeks looking through silver patterns and an untold amount of time perusing articles from the 1800’s on Google books. Often you think you found the answer, only to realize later that the answer you found was wrong.
So, one of the purposes of this blog is to ask questions and share answers about those unusual and hard to identify vintage and antique items. Quite often I will publish a “What Is This?” post with description and pictures of an item, hoping that you, my readers, will have an answer!
Let’s give this a try and see how it works.

What Is This?
Does this look familiar to anyone? This little tin container has a wooden dowel, thread and needles within. It measures only a little over 2 inches long. It could be a military sewing kit or it could be Boy Scouts. What Are These?
I have spent many hours searching the internet trying to find out what these unusual shaped mother of pearl items would be used for…with no luck. I thought perhaps they were some sort of collar stay but I can find no evidence of that. They measure just under an inch by approximately 3/4 of an inch. Two of the five are similar, they other three are different. Two lay perfectly flat and three have a slight arch.
Does anyone know what they are? What would they be used for?

Who Made This Peggy Nappy?
It wasn’t too long ago when I had never even heard of “peg nappy”… then I started to do research on this piece and discovered it was, in fact, a peg nappy. However, who manufactured it, when, is it Depression Glass and what pattern name (if any) has not been determined even though I have spent hours researching it. Does anyone out there know?
What Kind of Shells Are These?
What type of seashells these are is a mystery to me. I thought their identification would be a relatively simple matter…until I started searching the internet. There are hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of different types of shells and none of them matched these. Maybe they’re not “sea” shells, maybe they’re “land” shells? Maybe they’re some sort of operculum?
They are beautiful, of that I am certain. They measure approximately 1 inch long by 7/8ths of an inch wide, of course each one is slightly different. The interior has a soft lavender shade blending to white.
Please look at the photos and should you just happen to know what kind of shells these are, I’d love to hear from you.
What Is This?
A friend of mine showed me this bar of soap and told me it had belonged to his grandmother who was born in 1900 and must have treasured it for she carved her name on the back. It was never used and kept wrapped in the same brown paper for probably over 100 years.
Shouldn’t be too difficult to research, right? Wrong. I researched “Thomas Woroms”…nothing. I researched just “Woroms” and “Worom”…nothing (there aren’t too many Woroms in history). I researched “Thomas soap”…nothing. In researching “Nankin” I did find that it is an alternative spelling of a city in China. The word “Nankin” is associated with color…as “Nankin Yellow” or “Nankin Brown” but nothing related to soap.
I researched the central figure holding the banner or flag and could not find a match for it. The carved symbols do not seem to relate to any language.
I’m not even positive this is a bar of soap. It’s very light, which could be due to age. It does seem to have a light scent to it but that could be my imagination. I don’t want to rub water on it as it has been unused for at least a century or more.
Maybe this is a school project with the intent of teaching children the art of making soap, and to keep their interest included a stamp depicting a mystical figure and ficticious soap manufacturer. I just don’t know…
Does anyone have any clues?

What Pattern Is This?
This silver plate spoon is marked “WM. ROGERS & SON. AA” and you would think it would be fairly simple to identify this distinctive pattern, possibly from the Aesthetic Period. However, this is one that has stumped me for quite a while now. I’ve scoured websites searching for this pattern. Three of my favorite search sites follow:
http://www.silverpattern.com/patterns_in_silverplate.htm, http://sterlingflatwarefashions.com/SPPatterns/WmRogers6.html, and http://www.antiquecupboard.com/Mfg.asp?Mfg=Rogers+%2F+International.
Does anyone know the name of this pattern?

Hello!
Hi, I'm the proud owner of an Etsy shop called "queenofsienna" which contains an eclectic collection of jewelry, clothing, accessories, vanity items, textiles, fabrics, sewing items, silver, silverplate, glass, ceramics, pottery, housewares, tools, desktop items, decorative arts, books, ephemera, exonumia, toys, games, children’s things, some interesting antiques, unusual vintage items, and specialized collectibles.
When I first heard the name or word "Etsy" I automatically thought of my cat, "Itzy" (she's that beautiful white cat in the banner up above).
Itzy was dropped off at my door about a decade ago by an elderly couple who were friends of mine and knew I had a fondness of cats. This tiny little pure white kitten showed up in their yard and positioned itself on the warm stone patio underneath their bird feeder. They watched it for a couple of days and wondered whether it was male or female. They referred to it as "it" and that developed into "Itzy". It was obviously not well and they worried that it wouldn't survive another day...so they brought it to me. I hurried home from work early that day when I received their phone call. I took one look at this sick, very fragile tiny kitten and didn't think it would live through the night. I called my local vet, a very caring and dear man, and described the situation. He told me to bring the kitten over immediately. Despite the open gash on her throat and the fact that she only weighed 2 1/2 pounds, she seemed to be healthy. He told me to feed her orphan kittens milk and what ever other cat food she would eat and to bring her back in a couple of weeks. Well, to put it in a nutshell, she thrived. Here she is today, a decade later, weighing almost 14 pounds. And what a beauty she is.
So that's my "Etsy" "Itzy" story...
The items in my shop are vintage and antique pieces that were acquired by generations of two families. It is an eclectic mix, that's for sure.
I am the author of two novels, "In Our Image" and its sequel, "Abode of the Clouds"...about ancient aliens, UFO's, Rh Negative Blood and good versus evil. Please see my blog "inourimage.wordpress.com" for more information, posts and comments.
